Where will my massage or bodywork session take place? 
Your massage or bodywork session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a table especially designed for your comfort with fresh, clean towels / drapes and bolsters or pillows available to help you feel relaxed and secure.

Must I be completely undressed? 
Most massage and bodywork techniques are performed with the client unclothed; however, we always recommend that you undress only to your level of comfort. We always drape modestly and keep areas covered if they are not being worked on.

Thai Massage is traditionally performed completely clothed, so please let us know if this is your preference.

Will you be present when I disrobe? 
After we discuss your intake and any concerns or goals you have, if the session requires undressing, I will leave the room and allow you to undress to your level of comfort. You will lay on the table and cover yourself with a drape. Before re-entering the room, I will knock and wait for your permission to enter.

Will I be covered during the session?
If the particular style requires undressing, you will be modestly draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed. Please talk to me if you have any concerns.

If the particular style is performed clothed, I recommend loose, breathable clothing that allows you to feel comfortable whether lying down, standing, or doing minor movements.

What parts of my body will be massaged? 
A typical full-body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders. Abdominal work is also available. The type of session and style of bodywork you choose will dictate exactly which areas receive work. If you would like a particular area to be skipped or to receive extra time, please let me know and I’m happy to accommodate you.

What will the massage or bodywork feel like?
A relaxing Swedish/Wellness massage is often a baseline for clients. In a general Wellness massage, your session will start with broad, flowing strokes that will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. We have a few options of cream or butters or oil to allow your muscles and soft tissue to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin. This also helps hydrate your skin. You should communicate immediately if you feel any discomfort. Massage and bodywork are most effective when your body is not resisting!

Are there different kinds of massage and bodywork? 
There are numerous types of massage and bodywork; various techniques utilize different strokes, including basic rubbing strokes, rocking movements, posture and movement re-education, application of pressure to specific points, and more. We can discuss which methods are the most appropriate for you and your goals, so please feel free to ask questions.

What should I do during the massage or bodywork session?
Prior to the session or during the intake, feel free to ask any questions about the technique or the upcoming appointment. During the treatment, just make yourself comfortable. I will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people just close their eyes and completely relax, communicating if/when they need more or less pressure, another blanket, or anything else relevant to the session. If you have any questions regarding the session or about the particular technique you are receiving, please ask! I love being able to help clients understand what their body is doing, what the specific techniques are for, or why I chose one option over another. Your understanding and commitment are vital to making sure the session is as effective as it can be.

How will I feel after the massage or bodywork session? 
After a wellness massage, most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling very calm and peaceful, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days.

After a clinical or therapeutic treatment, it is normal to feel some mild soreness or muscle fatigue in the problem area for 24-48 hours after the session, especially if there were adhesions or scar tissue that was broken up. I compare this to the feeling you have after a good workout. Your body is responding to what we asked it to do during the session and there may be a feeling of ‘re-organization’ if the change made in the session was significant for you. Please always let me know if there is any discomfort during or after a session and we can adjust accordingly.

What are the benefits of massage and bodywork? 
Massage and bodywork can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure. Massage and bodywork are also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety and create an overall sense of well-being.

Are there any medical conditions that would make massage or bodywork inadvisable? 
Yes. That’s why it’s imperative that, before you begin your session, you fill out the client intake form and we discuss some general health questions. It is very important that you inform me of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor or naturopath’s care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage or bodywork prior to any session. Depending on the condition, approval from your other healthcare professionals may be required.
